Why get a passport case

You will have your passport typically valid for 10 years. You don't want to mix it with your used clothes nor would you want to expose it to foreign substances. A passport's paper book can easily be ruined in a span of minutes. Please protect it.

Yes, you're going to need international currency. In all likelihood, you'd also need to print that important document-- be it your visa, hotel reservation, and other booking. I know, I know, it's the 21st century. But hey, your smartphone can eventually run out of battery, not to mention some establishments still require physical documents printed out.

Why vegetable-tanned leather

Vegetable-tanned leather is widely associated with tradition and craft. It involves undergoing an old-world artisinal process that takes advantage of the tannic acids naturally found in select plant species, by using the barks, branches, leaves and even some fruits in some specific techniques.

Vegetable tanning does not utilize harmful chemicals compared to its chrome tanning counterpart, resulting to a more natural and earthy aesthetic. Chrome tanning uses chemicals that enables tanning of leather to be completed in a span of days, and in so doing typically translates to a dyed and painted product that carries a chemical smell.

With vegetable-tanned leather, its more natural attributes enable it to change over time and acquire sought-after aging qualities, such as a unique 'patina' or caramelisation of colour acquired with use.

Why hand-sewn

Before the advent of sewing machines and the Industrial Revolution, leather goods were hand-sewn by artisans. Hand-stitched leather is more durable and long-lasting than its machine-sewn counterpart. It is done by using two needles and an awl to create a saddle stitch, where the first needle is passed from the back to the front in an inter-lapping manner. Hand-sewn leather is more time-consuming than its machine-sewn alternative, and can be recognised by the thicker thread it uses.

Derived from "The Art of Handsewing Leather" by Al Stohlman.
